OSHA (or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) defines spray finishing operations as the “employment of methods wherein organic or inorganic materials are utilized in dispersed form for deposit on surfaces to be coated, treated, or cleaned.” In other words, the method of coating, treating or cleaning surfaces, such as engines and components, using specifically designed equipment used to spray organic or inorganic materials. Spray operations can present both physical and health hazards to those involved. This module covers flammable and combustible finishing materials when applied as a spray by compressed air. This module applies to indoor spray application only; it does not apply to outdoor spray applications.
